Were those who signed up now apostates?
No, Lloyd Barry was a member of the Governing Body and head of the Writing Department, but recently passed away. Robert Johnson and Ciro Aulicino are still at Bethel as faithful Witnesses.

Does the Watchtower promote the United Nations on their website?

Does the Watchtower deny being an NGO with the U.N.?
No, they admit to it, but act as if the discovery of it is inconsistent with their principles, because they were caught  in their hypocrisy.

What about arguments raised by Witnesses defending the Society's actions?
The Watchtower Society does not allow unofficial spokesmen, so any "answers" given by such ones are worthless unless used by the Watchtower Society itself. Their only answer thus far has been, they wanted the NGO status to use the library. As more news leaked out, they responded by saying that it was not really a compromise:

They hint at the requirements having changed since 1991, but this is not the case. Obtaining a library card does not require the extensive cooperation with the United Nations that an NGO does, and the Watchtower on several occasions has made attempts to fulfill such obligations! One seeker requested the original filing by the Watchtower from 1992, and this was the response from the U.N.:

What is the most damning evidence of their hypocrisy in this matter thus far?
