Naturally, the literate mother stimulates the learning process in her children - no mean feat. The education of girls is an excellent investment. Nothing else has such power to improve family health and to improve the lives of women themselves, notes the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) publication The State of the World's Children 1991. No doubt about it, reading and writing skills will help you to be a better mother and provider.

What is being done to reduce the risk of trauma in lands sown with mines? Government-sponsored mine-awareness programs are in place in many countries. According to a report of the United Nations secretary-general, these programs teach "populations at risk . . . how to minimize their chances of becoming victims while living and working in mined areas."
Sadly, "people become accustomed to the presence of mines and grow careless," says a United Nations report. "Sometimes religious factors encourage [people] to adopt a fatalistic attitude towards such dangers." A fatalistic attitude, however, finds no support in God's Word. On the contrary, the Bible encourages caution and safety.—Deuteronomy 22:8; Ecclesiastes 10:9.
So by exercising caution and taking reasonable steps to protect your health, you can greatly reduce your risk of losing a limb. But what about those who have already lost limbs? Can they still enjoy a good quality of life? The next article answers this question.

But not all the news is bad! UN agencies, such as the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization, have worked hard to improve the lot of children. The right to a name and nationality.
The right to affection, love, and understanding and to material security.
The right to adequate nutrition, housing, and medical services.
The right to special care if disabled, be it physically, mentally, or socially.
The right to be among the first to receive protection and relief in all circumstances.
The right to be protected against all forms of neglect, cruelty, and exploitation.
The right to full opportunity for play and recreation and equal opportunity to free and compulsory education, to enable the child to develop his individual abilities and to become a useful member of society.
The right to develop his full potential in conditions of freedom and dignity.
The right to be brought up in a spirit of understanding, tolerance, friendship among peoples, peace, and universal brotherhood.
The right to enjoy these rights regardless of race, color, sex, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, and property, birth, or other status.

To verify that the Watchtower Society was indeed cooperating with the UN, keeping the UN "abreast" of their work, and "providing samples" of their work to support the "beast", consider the following page on the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights web site, and note the second item in the list.
The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society voluntarily applied for and obtained a formal association with the organization they teach is the "scarlet-colored wild beast" of Revelation and the "disgusting thing" of Daniel, the enemy of God. In doing so, they agreed not only to support the "beast", but to build support for the beast. To this end, they committed to use their publications - which they profess to be God's channel of communication - as a channel of communication for the beast, and they have clearly lived up to this commitment. They have gone so far as to report back to the beast, submitting samples of their efforts in "mobilizing public opinion in support of the UN".
All of this begs the question, are these the actions of a "faithful and discreet" slave of the Lord?
